I just came across your post while researching the development of the new ISO energy management standard. I am really interested in how the standard will align with ISO 14001 and ISO 9001, and how industries are responding to the new standard. As an attendee at the US TAG meetings, I imagine you may have some valuable insights, and I was just wondering if I could pick your brains? (My research deadline is Wednesday 25th - horribly short notice I know - so if there's anything you can give me before then it would be great!). Thanks very much for your time.

Well, simple alignments with ISO 14001 and ISO 9001 involve areas like internal auditing and corrective/preventive action. More challenging alignments are being debated concerning required energy planning activities and energy supply and supplier management. Since this is an international standard, there has to actually be some consideration to energy regulations which vary greatly from country to country. Regulatory requirement are more of a focus within an ISO 14001 system. As I mentioned, the next international meeting is set for next month. The goal is to have a more unified standard approach so we can work on the details for the balance of the year.

Thanks so much for responding - I really appreciate it. Would you be at all willing to speak to me via telephone, just to answer a couple of questions on the matter? I am flexible and could call any time, if OK with you. If not, thanks again for your comments.

I find the work you and your colleagues are doing on ISO50001 very exciting. Could you send me a draft copy of the current version of the standard. Thanks a million

I will try to report key updates along the way, but as with all these ISO type efforts, it not really appropriate to distribute early drafts outside the committee. We are still in the early stages of development where many items are changing and we wouldn't want anyone to believe something definite is imminent. ISO 50001 due to release now in late 2010. Stay tuned.

I am heading the Corporate Energy cell of Reliance Industries Limited, the largest private sector company in India. Our business interest covers Oil&gas exploration, petroleum refining, petrochemicals, textiles etc. We are truly an Energy Company.
We came across the work being undertaken by ISO PC 242 team to establish an international energy mangement standard ISO 50001. We would like to be one of the first few companies to embrace this standard. We shall appreciate your support in the matter & also an update on the current status of this standard development.
We shall appreciate your response on this matter. Kindly also suggest the preparatory work to be done by us upfront for smooth & easy implementation of this standard in our manufacturing facilities.
We plan to first undertake this in our petrochemical business either the entire units or concentrate only on few selected units to begin with. Your advice is most welcome & will be very helpful in crystallizing our thoughts.
I shall be happy to receive your periodic updates on email. Please include me in your mailing list. We are eagerly awaiting roll out of this new standard.
Regards
