ISO Energy Standard Update – A Different Type of Holiday Gift
Just in time for the holidays, I received my copy of a shiny new ISO 50001 Working Draft 2 (WD2). The International Project Committee (PC 242) provided comments to the WD1 released back in October, and we now had the much anticipated documented result from our very own PC 242 “Santa Convener” (the PC 242 convener leads the compilation of the evolving standard and moderates the international committee meetings. He worked some magic at the first PC 242 meeting back in September – see post International Flavors for Energy).
You see, this Christmas magic worked just the same. The committee “kids” from all over the world sent their “wish list” of comments to Santa hoping that their requests would be good enough to be wrapped into the surprise of WD2. Santa and his review elves sure had their work cut out for them as the international committee created 290 pages of wishes for the anticipated December delivery:
They marked their copies and commented with great care, hoping the changes and ideas for the standard would surely be in there.
The great day finally came on December 18 as the updated standard draft appeared in my email box. However, this special gift came with instructions for the US team:
When what to my wandering eyes did appear, the requirement to review and comment again by the end of the year.
As the energy management system standard begins to take shape, key discussions on its compatibility and alignment with other national and international management system standards continue to be important. We are also debating the level of emphasis on energy supply management in contrast with the adopted requirements relating to managing energy demand. Energy metrics and analysis. Documentation and records. Training and operational control. Yep, it’s all in there.
The US Technical Action Group (TAG) had planned a meeting for Jan 13-14, and we wanted to discuss everyone’s comments on the WD2. So there was no vacation time to spare. Those comments had to be in:
Her message exclaimed, as we planned our holiday delight,
Happy Christmas to all, and don’t forget to review WD2 each night.
I returned yesterday from our US TAG group meeting in San Francisco graciously hosted by our committee chair from Pacific Gas and Electric. It is evident that the group is really committed as we started on Tuesday with a fresh 233 pages of WD2 comments.
The next international committee meeting is scheduled for Brazil in March. Stay tuned…

We came across the work being undertaken by ISO PC 242 team to establish an international energy mangement standard ISO 50001. We would like to be one of the first few companies to embrace this standard. We shall appreciate your support in the matter & also an update on the current status of this standard development.
We shall appreciate your response on this matter. Kindly also suggest the preparatory work to be done by us upfront for smooth & easy implementation of this standard in our manufacturing facilities.
We plan to first undertake this in our petrochemical business either the entire units or concentrate only on few selected units to begin with. Your advice is most welcome & will be very helpful in crystallizing our thoughts.
I shall be happy to receive your periodic updates on email. Please include me in your mailing list. We are eagerly awaiting roll out of this new standard.

Sounds exciting, would be great if it aligns to ISO 9/14.
